Another game, another all-but-must-win for the LA Kings.
For the Arizona Coyotes, it’s just another game on their schedule that they essentially need to lose.
The two teams find themselves on opposite ends of the spectrum heading into tonight’s game at Staples Center. Every loss added to the Coyotes record gives them a better shot at the McEichel Derby.

Meanwhile, the Kings, yet again, find themselves out of the playoff picture following their loss against the Nashville Predators.
Seriously, how are the Calgary Flames doing this?
Please don’t screw this up, Coyotes. Your team needs to lose. It’s the franchise’s best shot at becoming relevant again …without moving to Quebec or Seattle.
Of course, things rarely go as planned when the Kings and Coyotes face-off against each other.
It was 364 days ago that these two teams played on St. Patrick’s Day. That, too, was the 69th game of the season for the Kings. They rallied from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead heading into the final period. It felt like the game was all but wrapped up:
Kings 21-0-0 when leading after 40. Coyotes 6-16-6 when trailing after 2.

I made sure to point out this information to a friend of mine who happens to be the only Coyotes fan I know in Los Angeles …or anywhere for that matter. This friend – let’s just call him “Sherman” – wasn’t too impressed.
Sherman after the second period.
He shrugged and responded with, “That’s gotta end sometime.”
I scoffed. Then 20 minutes later I hated him because he wouldn’t let me forget that stupid stat.
…and Sherman after the game.
I have nothing else to add because Kings-Coyotes games are always dumb and I expect nothing to change tonight.
