The LA Kings have 6 games left in their 2014-15 season and they will not make the playoffs without significant help from the rest of the league. Knowing which team to root for in any given matchup can be complicated so we’ve put together this handy guide for you.
RULE 1 – Always root for an Eastern Conference Team over a Western Conference Team.
RULE 2 – Almost always root for a Central Division Team over a Pacific Division Team.
RULE 3 – Always root for the higher ranked team when two Central Division Teams are playing each other.
and introducing… MAGIC NUMBERS
Any Kings win reduces every Magic Number by 2.
A regulation loss by any team reduces their MN by 2.
Any Kings OT/SO loss reduces every MN by 1.
An OT/SO loss by any team reduces their MN by 1.
Any Kings loss or win by another team does not change the Magic Numbers.
Once a teams Magic Number reaches zero, they cannot finish higher than the Kings at the end of the season.

Root: STARS
Ordinarily I hate rooting for St. Louis, but the Blues can clinch their playoff spot and inevitable first round exit with a win in Regulation/OT and Vancouver is still within reach of the Kings. It’s horrible and it might not pay off but sometimes you have to do things you don’t like.
Root: BLUES
If this game had a name it would be Greg Stink.
Root: OILERS
Hey Vancouver…
Root: PREDATORS
As it stands right now, the Kings are focusing on the Pacific Division but if Vancouver and Calgary keep winning but Winnnipeg and Minnesota or even Chicago go on a losing streak and that’s couple with a Kings winning streak that matches the Flames and Canucks then it’s possible the Kings could wind up as the Wild Card team in either the Pacific or Central Division depending on whether or not St. Louis or Nashville or Anaheim winds up taking the top seed in the conference and which of the two Wild Card seeds is available or maybe it won’t even matter at all.
Root: RANGERS
The Sharks finally name a new Captain.
Root: AVALANCHE
So I gotta keep rooting for the Blues huh?
Root: BLUES
I don’t like rooting for New York teams but the Minnesota Wild is STILL a stupid name for a team.
Root: RANGERS
The Kings can still wind up with Home Ice in the first round of the playoffs. As strange and unlikely as the words may sound…
