THE ROOT TO THE PLAYOFFS: Mar. 2nd – Mar. 5th

The LA Kings have 20 games left in their 2014-15 season and they will not make the playoffs without significant help from the rest of the league. Knowing which team to root for in any given matchup can be complicated so we’ve put together this handy guide for you.

Rooting Guidelines for games not involving the Kings:

RULE 1 – Always root for an Eastern Conference Team over a Western Conference Team.

RULE 2 – Almost always root for a Central Division Team over a Pacific Division Team.

RULE 3 – Always root for the higher ranked team when two Central Division Teams are playing each other.

Sure it was 100 years ago and a completely different franchise, but at least one incarnation of the Senators has won the Stanley Cup while the previous Minnesota hockey team had to move to Texas to finally win it.

SPEAKING OF WHICH!

The Stars have won the Stanley Cup more recently than the Islanders, but the Islanders have won it more times.

Calgary at Philadelphia

While both of these teams have made terrible blunders recently and are both equally far away from serious contention, the Flyers still have two Stanley Cup banners to the Flames one.

Neither of these teams has ever won the Stanley Cup. Ever. Not even once. At least the Canucks have reached the Final a few times.

WEDNESDAY, March 4th

Ottawa at Winnipeg

This is a match up between two teams that are named after a previous franchise and have never won the Stanley Cup. The Senators have a Stanley Cup Final appearance in their history. The Jets used to be the Thrashers.

THURSDAY, March 5th

Calgary at Boston

Jarome Iginla couldn’t lead either of these teams to a Stanley Cup. That’s about the only thing these two franchises have in common.

Minnesota at Washington

Another face-off between Cupless teams. The Capitals have a Stanley Cup Final appearance. The Wild are just a knockoff of the North Stars.

So this is where the “More Banners = ROOT” formula falls apart. Well it was a good run. You know what else was a good run? The 1996 Florida Panthers run to the Stanley Cup Final!
