Back on the Blueline

In a span of 12 hours, the Los Angeles Kings traded for an injured player and then were surprised when he didn’t pass a physical. Then, they went out and barely beat an NHL team with a 10-13 record whose leading goal scorer is someone named Mike Santorelli. So in an effort to put a halt to the negative publicity they received during the day… the Kings Marketing Department went ahead and introduced it’s brand new broadcast team… featuring one of the most hated Kings player ever.

I, for one, want to state that I am a fan of Rob Blake’s time as a Los Ange…

Kings 3, Panthers 2

For some reason Fox Sports West HD decided to send Patrick O’Neal and Rob Blake 91 miles away from Staples Center to the Morongo Hotel and Casino for the in-between period segments. I’ve seen infomercials that have been been more believable than the “oh, don’t mind us, we are just analyzing the game from 91 miles away” product tie-in between the Kings and the Morongo Hotel and Casino.

I have no idea what they are selling, but I’ll take 6 of them.

But the big story here was former Kings defenseman, Rob Blake, and his debut as a Fox Sports West HD hockey analyst. On the ice, Rob Blake was one the most dominate defensemen in the NHL during the late 90’s/early 2000’s. He won a Norris Trophy with the Kings, a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche and a Gold Medal with Team Canada. He was known for his strong shot from the point and his hipcheck along the boards. An excellent defensive defenseman, he was rarely known to be out of position late in a game. Until last night.

No, Rob… you are supposed to look straight into the camera that has the red light on top.
Who the hell is teaching Rob how to be a broadcast professional?!?

Oh, Patrick O’Neal is. Well, that makes sense then.

Really, Fox Sports West crew? Rope Light?
You drive an hour and a half away from downtown LA and you dress the set with rope light??

Over the course of the night, the analysis wasn’t about the Kings penalty killing strength at home or the Florida Panthers ability to get shots on net… no it was about what clothes they were wearing… and when.

The night starts in suits and no gloves.

After the 1st period, Patrick O’Neal slips on some gloves while Rob Blake remains a man.

After the 2nd period, O’Neal mans up and takes off the gloves,
while Rob puts a jacket on to fight the 45 degree temperature in the desert.

For the post game, O’Neal puts the gloves back on.

And Rob Blake wasn’t the only extremely hated Los Angeles Kings alumni to grace the broadcast last night. It seems that you can’t spell Morongo Hotel and Casino…. without moron.

I wonder if the Kings Fantasy Camp McSorley was plugging includes proper stick swinging techniques.?

I mean, could there be any more annoying ex-Kings as part of tonights broadcast?!?

Oh, didn’t see you there, Foxy.

With Heidi Androl “on assignment“, Fox Sports dragged Dan Moriarty out of the hockey host closet to take her place. Seriously this dude has been around forever… hosting any fringe NHL-related tv event there is.

“Hey, Ryno! It’s me, Dan! We did that piece together at the Edmonton Mall in 95. Remember?”

“I have no idea who you are… and no one calls me Ryno. Where the hell is Androl?”

“Um, Mr. Moriarty, it’s just that it’s usually Ms. Androl that interviews me after I win.
Do you know if she’ll be by later?”

“I’m done kidding around. Where is she?”

“Are you serious?! Heidi’s not here? Ugh, tonight was going to be the night I proposed!”

Woo-hoo! Nearly 24 hours later and the Kings still haven’t beefed up their Left Winger position and they barely beat a struggling team from Florida. Red Wings on Saturday? Awesome. You better believe that The Royal Half will be there!!!
