The Fail on Fan Day

Do not make comparisons to the Miracle on Manchester, the Frenzy on Figueroa or even the Royal Rebound. No, the Los Angeles Kings rally to tie from being down 3-0 in the 3rd period of today’s game against the Edmonton Oilers does not deserve a clever nickname. It should not be memorialized in any fashion. This Kings team is definitely stumbling into the playoffs and even though they had 55 shots against the NHL’s worst team (by 10 points!) the Kings struggled to find their way all game. The Oilers were 1-19-2 on the road since December 22nd, 2009. Now they are 2-19-2. Both those road wins? Against the Kings. And now even the coach of the worst team in hockey is calling the kettle black.

“The Kings have some talent and grit, but the goals we had were easy,” Pat Quinn said. “So if they keep that as a standard, then they won’t go far in the playoffs. They have great forwards that play well, and (Drew) Doughty and (Jack) Johnson are very talented on the defensive side, so once they have solid goaltending, they will always have a chance to win.”

But you know what? Now is not the time to panic as Kings fans. Because today was the first time in 8 years that when saying goodbye to my fellow Season Ticket Holders at the last home game of the season… I could say “see ya next week.” And that felt better than any sort of comeback victory could have tonight. Okay, well maybe 2 points would have felt better… but would this anecdote be as touching? I think not.

I’m feeling that someone didn’t really get his money’s worth with this shirt purchase.

Kings 3, Oilers 4

Check out all the photographic craziness that is Los Angeles Kings Fan Appreciation Day… after the jump!!!

Spring is most definitely in the air in Los Angeles and it’s the perfect time to do a little spring cleaning. And the Kings did just that today… auctioning off some of the scrub-iest jerseys you’ll ever see!

Worst part of all? These are pre-season jerseys. Starting bids were at 75 dollars.
It took every ounce of strength to not bid on the Moulson one.

The end of the regular season is not usually the time you start debuting new features at the Staples Center, but tonight was the first time I noticed this.

Located in the space that was once the Fox Sports Bar and Grill, the Sports Museum of Los Angeles seems to have found a home inside of Staples Center. The collection is pretty interesting… especially if you like giant over-sized old-timey posters of sports movies. I can’t say that Los Angeles Kings crowds are really the sports museum going type… they were constantly having to be reminded that you couldn’t touch everything. I can only imagine what happens when the Laker crowds are let in. In addition to a Sports Museum coming out of nowhere… there were some other brand new additions to the regular Staples Center attractions.

I’d imagine the Kings organization waited until the last possible moment
before authorizing the run of playoff-themed Kings merchandise. You know, just in case.

And please, a friendly little reminder from The Royal Half. I know it will be tempting as playoff merchandise will be available for the first time in 8 years… but do not purchase Kings gear while drunk. You could end up like these 3:

Worst. Jersey Purchases. Ever.

I think it’s cool that 2 of the greatest Oilers both rocked numbers in the high 90′s.

Oh, little girl. Jarret Stoll uses the same pickup line at Sharkeez.

Hey LA Kings Marketing Department… you aren’t going to get me to want to buy some clothes from some designer that is sponsoring the Kings by putting clothes ON the Ice Girls!

IMG_2360

The Ice Girls came out for their first ice scraping of the night wearing the latest duds from William Rast. At least it turned out better than the Kings last foray into fashion modeling.

But today was all about the Fans. And one lucky person won a Toyota 4Runner by winning the worst game of musical chairs I’ve ever seen.

IMG_2363

Man, this Tron sequel does not look good.

And then the players took the jerseys off their backs and handed them to a select few fans. Even Bailey got in on the action.

IMG_2368

Dude, Bailey is buff.

So even though the Kings lost 4-3 to the worst team in the NHL, as fans poured out into the hallways of Staples Center, the Kings Organization did a good job of reminding Kings fans what is important.
