Pundays: Seven Minutes in Heaven
Being a writer means taking chances. And just because you are spending your nights waiting for hockey games across the country to finish doesn’t mean that you can’t take a chance. So for one certain NHL.com pun headline writer, Saturday night’s Western Conference Final rematch between the Vancouver Canucks and the Chicago Blackhawks… was their time to shine.
Posted just a few minutes before the 7pm PST start.
Posted just minutes after the Blackhawks 7-1 win.
Actually, it turns out that this particular writer is just a huge fan of the former CW show, 7th Heaven.
Another big story this past week in the NHL was Montreal goalie Carey Price’s 3 shutouts in 6 games. And in covering this big story, much like Carey Price, the pun headline writers covered all angles.
You had the pun based on a movie no one saw.
You had a tie-in with the Beatles catalogue becoming available on iTunes.
And then you had the working class angle.
I guess if they were Bob Dylan fans, they would have gone with Neu Morning.
With American Thanksgiving coming up this week, you can’t blame the NHL.com pun headline writers for having food on their minds. And what’s better than some steak and pie?
I never get tired of puns about losing teams.
I know for a fact there are one or two Kings fans writing headlines for NHL.com
and part of me thinks they were really trying to say “Slick Move, Perry” with this one.
Speaking of the Los Angeles Kings, Michal Handzus’ shootout winner against the Bruins was so nice, NHL.com had to pun headline it twice.
After showing great promise last week, FoxSports.com was back where it belonged this week… in the gutter.
Team Ladd-er would have made much more sense.
Yeah, because the Detroit Red Wings aren’t good enough,
they have to be celebrated for coming from behind once every 10 games.
But of course, the real story this week was Colie-Gate, as a blogger uncovered some important emails from the depths of his parents basement. And to celebrate this story, the NHL.com pun headline writers gave a shout-out to one of their favorite bloggers.
And since people were talking this week about how bloggers are starting to outshine the Mainstream Media, it seems natural that it would also extend to pun-filled headlines. Exhibit A, from Life in Hockeywood, one of the premiere Los Angeles Kings blogs not named The Royal Half.
You almost wish Theo Fleury was playing in this game.
And finally, this weeks winner of the Punday Headline of the Week, Foreign or Domestic…
It’s really just three letters away from being pornographic.
