52 Pick Up

What can you say about a game like that? The Los Angeles Kings pretty much dominated the Detroit Red Wings the entire night… took a colossal 52 shots against Jimmy Howard… and still found a way to keep losing to the Red Wings. You can put as much lipstick on a Kings uniform as you want… but it’s still gonna lose to Detroit.

“Really? I can’t score more than 1 goal on 52 shots?!?”

Kings 1, Red Wings 2, Jimmy Howard 51

It was Russian Heritage Night at Staples Center and every single person of Russian Heritage in the greater Southern California showed up tonight ready to play… well, everyone but Alexander Frolov. (HEY-OH!) There was some great relics of Russian History all over the Staples Center as well as Section 217.

I’m not going to get into the crazy analysis of this game. If the Kings play every game from here on out like this… then the team is most definitely going to make the playoffs. Over the past week or so, Kyle from Babcock’s Death Stare and I have been engaging in a healthy “Who Should Be the 3rd Goalie on the American Olympic Team” debate… the Kings’ Jon Quick or the Red Wings’ Jimmy Howard. Well, after the game tonight, the answer is simple… kick Tim Thomas to the curb and put both Quick and Howard on the team! Sure, Howard had a whole serving of luck and Kings players not being able to lift the puck into an empty night during the game tonight… but Howard also made his fair share of unbelievable saves. You don’t make 51 saves in an NHL game solely on luck. I guess my only question about Howard is if he becomes an elite NHL goaltender over the next few seasons… does he change his name to James? You know, kinda like how Ricky Schroeder became Rick Schroeder.

Actually, I’m pretty sure he’ll always be known as Jimmy.

If you are the Kings… you acknowledge and move on to the next game. Putting themselves 2 points away from the Red Wings and 2 points closer to the Phoenix Coyotes would have been a great victory tonight (or even 1 point, stupid Sean O’Donnell!) but this team has to know that after years of chasing the Red Wings around the rink… it was the Wings who did the chasing tonight. Except if you were sitting in the crowd… then the Red Wings weren’t running around at all… they were standing and cheering.
