We Think We Can Do This E-mail

Even though Fox Sports West HD broadcast the Kings game yesterday in Boston, they chose not to send a crew to Sunday's game in New Jersey. Fortunately New Jersey Devils' play by play announcer Mike "Doc" Emrick is one of the best in the business and a pleasure to listen to. So thanks to the Center Ice package, I can just fire up the game and listen to Doc.

nj announcers

What the hell is this shit?

Oh so Doc was TOO busy doing the NBC game of the week. Steve Cangialosi was fine... pretty uneventful as a play by play guy actually... but man-oh-man... Chico Resch is probably THE worst color analyst I've ever heard... and I listen to Jim Fox nearly 80 games a year. Chico is awful. Just awful. He sounds like your drunk grandfather who has forgotten his hearing aid... he's always screaming, he rambles from subject to subject and he has no idea what he is saying most of the time. Like in this clip for instance:

Most. Awkward Throw to Commercial. Ever.

I seriously have no idea how Devils' fans can listen to this guy every night. And by the way, Steve and Chico... Jarret Stoll is NOT one of the Staal brothers. There is an "O" in that last name. And even worse than the MSG Plus announcers was the lineup for the Devils. I mean, seriously... this team is in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference?

That Rolston-McAmmond-Langenbrunner line is quite a powerhouse...
in 1996!
Older player BURN!!!

How have the New Jersey Devils consistently been one of the best NHL teams over the past decade or so? It never seems like they have any superstar players.

brodeur kings

Oh right. This guy. That's why.

So how do you beat one of the best teams in the NHL? Why you simply beat them at their own game... by having your own awesome Olympic goaltender.

quick wins

Kings 3, Devils 2, Jon Quick 31

If the Kings are lucky enough to make it into the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 6 years (7 if you count the Lockout) they will be able to look back at this game against the Devils as one of the moments where they said "Shit... I think we can do this."

wayne smile

"Shit... I think we can do this."

Down 2-1 with about a minute and a half left in the game, Wayne Simmonds throws the puck at the net and Ryan Smyth's mullet is big enough to screen Marty Brodeur. Excellent... the Kings will at least get a point on a night where Phoenix has won and the Av's have lost. Oh but wait... Andy Greene trips Anze Kopitar with a minute left and the Kings call a timeout so Assistant Coach Jamie Kompon can go over the plan for the Power Play.

kompon huddle

"Listen Smyth! I don't care if they are in the Eastern Conference...
I'm not giving them the goddamn bonus point. Now let's finish this and go home!"

And just like that... Drew Doughty scores a blast from the blueline with 27 seconds remaining in the game and the New Jersey Devils are left stunned. Wonder what that looks like?

Shock Lemaire.
Get it? SHOCK Lemaire.

The look of total disbelief on Jacques Lemaire's face not enough for you? Then how about this one?

shock broduer

Not as clever a caption for this one.

The best thing about being a realistic Kings fan is that you always know where this team has come from. Sure the Kings are playing fantastic right now. With the win tonight, the Kings are on a 6 game winning streak, which includes going 5-0 on the road... something this franchise has never done. Tomorrow is February and as the Kings head into the last few months of the 2009-2010 season... I will constantly remind you, The Royal Half Reader, that even though this team is playing excellent now... I've had to sit through so much crap in order to see them get to this place. Luckily, the MSG Plus graphics team put together this graphic to make the story of the LA Kings over the past few years decade, a bit easier to digest.

la story

Yup, that pretty much sums up the last 17 years of my life.
How about you?

Check out Running With the Devils and In Lou We Trust for all your Chico Resch-loving news and notes.

You want numbers?  24-0-0... the Devils' record when leading at the end of the 2nd period. 6 wins in a row, the Kings longest winning streak since the 2001-2002 season. 8-2 in their last 10. 10-4 in January. A NHL leading 19 wins on the road. These Kings return home to Los Angeles on Tuesday to take on the team that plays across the river from the New Jersey Devils... the almost new-look New York Rangers. And to think... Half Season Ticket Holder Buddy and I were almost going to sell our tickets to Tuesday's game at Staples because it's the same night as the premiere of the final season of Lost. Final Seasons of Lost happen all the time... there is no way I'm missing a potential 7 game winning Kings winning streak!

I haven't seen Marty look that crestfallen since Sean Avery used to hide his pie.

Haha good stuff. As a Devils fan I was embarrassed to watch them blow that game. As someone who has listened to Chico for 10+ years, I can say I now enjoy his ridiculous ramblings. Yea he's a total homer and wants Brodeur to teabag him, but he has entertainment value. Plus Doc is the best in the business. As far as the Devils being an awesome team every year, it isn't just Brodeur. He's a big reason, but its also the mentality of the organization. They are big on defensive responsibility, and every year they are cup or bust. That's why I love my team so much. On another note, I would love to see LA grab a playoff seed.

really? Doc Emeric the best in the business? The guys voice cracks every other word, he knows nothing about hockey, and always tries to impress the viewer by saying things like "100 seconds left in the period." Yes. Thanks Doc. You can do math

@Johnny7277.... obviously you've never heard the Anaheim Ducks John Ahlers do play by play for an NHL game.
